Artist Statement: Much of my work is done in watercolor, with subjects inspired by my experiences in kayaking, travel, sports and general love of outdoor activities. David Prehm, considers all of northeast Iowa his backyard. Whether sitting in the woods chatting with a turkey or kayaking one of the rocky streams, the scents, sounds, sunlight, and color gives him inspiration. When speaking about his paintings, he says, "It is not what we see with our eyes, it is what we feel in our hearts".

I began teaching art at North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa, and later moved to teach and coach at Britt High School (Iowa). While there I also began graduate work at Mankato State University (Minnesota), earning
a masterʼs degree in studio arts with an emphasis in painting in 1988. That year I also began to teach high school art in New Hampton, Iowa. While a graduate student, my passion for art began to surpass the desire to
coach. That, in turn, led to increased exhibition opportunities and several awards.

Over 500 paintings have found their way into private and public collections primarily throughout the Midwest states, but also to Norway, France, Czech Republic, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
